Day 1 (Suggestion Only): Arrive Auckland : Around Auckland

Day 1 Depending on what time you pick up your vehicle you can get an early start on your next day and head straight to Waitomo Cavea or simply spend the day exploring the sights around Auckland. A hub of sophistication, Auckland is situated between 2 enormous harbours and dotted with 48 extinct volcanic cones. You can enjoy marine adventures, wine adventures or forest trails. There is plenty to see and do in this fabulous city.

Day 2 (Suggestion Only): Auckland to Waitomo Caves 195 kms

Day 2 As you cruise down the southern motorway, suburban scenery gradually gives way to the farmland of South Auckland. The Waikato River will accompany you for much of your journey through the green countryside. Before you get to Hamilton, you’ll notice side roads leading to Waingaro Hot Springs and Raglan, a surf resort on the west coast. Attractions in Hamilton include gardens, riverboat cruising and a giant free flight aviary. Excellent restaurants and cafes can be found at the southern end of the city’s main street. A detour towards the coast will take you to Kawhia, where you can dig your own hot pool between low and mid tide. Just before the turn off to Waitomo, you’ll come to Otorohanga. The kiwi house in this town is a chance to meet New Zealand’s national symbol. The Waitomo Caves region is famous for its subterranean splendour. Beneath the surface of this ancient limestone region is a series of vast cave systems decorated with stalactites, stalagmites and glow-worms.

Day 3 Suggestion Only): Waitomo Caves to New Plymouth 182 kms

Day 3 Todays adventure takes you south to New Plymouth, renowned for its beautiful parks and gardens. At Awakino you can enjoy the wild beauty of the Tasman Sea. Stretch your legs along the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway, a seven kilometre parade of beaches and city attractions. Give your shutter finger some exercise at beautiful Lake Mangamahoe, an ideal location for taking pictures of Mount Taranaki. Then discover the rusted skeleton of the Gairloch, a coastal steamer that ran aground on a moonless night in 1903. The national park that surrounds Mt Taranaki has spectacular waterfalls and walkways to discover.

Day 4 (Suggestion Only): New Plymouth to Wanganui 166 kms

Day 4 You have a choice today! Enjoy the coastal route around Mt Egmont or take the inland route via Stratford and soak in the green serenity of the surrounding farmland. The forested lower slopes of the mountain are laced with walking tracks. Either way, the dramatic volcanic cone of Mt Taranaki will dominate the landscape for much of your journey. The rural centre of Hawera is home to New Zealand’s largest milk factory and an interactive dairy farming attraction. As the road heads South, interesting townships pop up regularly. Keep an eye out for small museums and quirky art shops. The picturesque river city of Wanganui has a long history. Take time to explore the restored heritage areas, then check out the various options for an expedition on the river. You can also take the tunnel and elevator to the top of Durie Hill.

Day 5 (Suggestion Only): Wanganui to Turangi 175 kms

Day 5 Today State Highway 4 will take you on a meandering journey through a world of rivers and gentle hill country. Just half an hour north from Raetihi is National Park Village, a friendly settlement that’s well positioned for those who want to explore the Tongariro National Park. All three volcanic peaks can be seen from here. New Zealand’s first national park, Tongariro was gifted to the New Zealand people in 1887 by the Ngati Tuwaretoa tribe and is now a World Heritage area. The Tongariro Crossing is regarded as one of the best one-day walks in the world. Your drive to Turangi follows the edge of the Tongariro National Park. The road to the historic Grand Chateau hotel and Whakapapa skifield turns off to the right. The chateau makes an excellent refreshment stop. Just before you reach Turangi, you’ll be tempted to enjoy a soak in the hot springs of Tokaanu. The town of Turangi is the trout fishing capital of New Zealand. Rafting on the Tongariro River is another way to enjoy the region.

Day 6 (Suggestion Only): Turangi to Taupo 49 kms

Day 6 If more amazing scenery is what you’re after, today will not disappoint. You’ll follow the western edge of New Zealand’s largest lake (actually an enormous volcanic crater) to reach Taupo Township. The drive is very scenic and there are many picnic opportunities along the way. Where streams run into the lake, you’ll often see trout fisherman trying their luck. The resort town of Taupo has everything a traveller could wish for, including an excellent choice of cafes and restaurants. Explore the scenic beauty of Lake Taupo by stretching your legs along one of many lakeside walking trails. Breathe it all in, its truly spectacular.

Day 7 (Suggestion Only): Taupo to Rotorua 76 kms

Day 7 Enjoy most of your day around Taupo before heading off to Rotorua. The road to Rotorua will keep you entertained with its unusual, volcanic geography. Near the beginning of your journey you’ll encounter Huka Falls and the Wairakei Geothermal Power Station. If you have an hour or two to spare, take a side road to a geothermal park. The city of Rotorua sits squarely on the Pacific Ring of Fire, so there’s evidence of volcanic activity everywhere you look. Explore the geothermal areas and discover the unique culture of New Zealand’s Maori people. Rotorua is entertaining in any weather, at any time of the year. There is a very strong sulphuric smell, but with so many fantastic sights you’re quickly distracted. Eleven beautiful lakes surround the geothermal town of Rotorua, so its time to download the memory card and start a new file!

Day 8 (Suggestion Only): Rotorua to Tauranga 86 kms

Day 8 Spend your morning around Rotorua before heading North to Tauranga. Your first stop is Okere Falls Scenic Reserve, from here you can walk to see the hydroelectric power station. Then the road climbs up and over the Mamaku Range before descending towards Te Puke. Te Puke is Kiwi Fruit Country, a town that has turned its kiwifruit industry into visitor entertainment. As you drive towards Tauranga, you will notice that this low-lying centre which straddles both the Waimapu and Waikareao Estuaries, is dominated by a hugely impressive extinct volcanic cone – Mount Maunganui.The city sprawls along the edge of an attractive harbour. There’s a well developed café culture and boat charters are available to take you big game fishing, snorkelling or dolphin watching.

Day 9 (Suggestion Only): Tauranga to Whitianga 170 kms

Day 9 The journey from Tauranga will take you past the town of Katikati, known for its murals. You’ll enjoy the fresh green scenery of the Athenree Gorge and a short detour takes you to the hot springs. Historic Waihi is an old gold mining town complete with museum and arts centre. Roadside stalls are an opportunity to buy seasonal fruit, such as oranges, kiwifruit and avocados. Whangamata is one of the country’s most attractive surf towns. Several charter companies run day trips to Mayor Island, which is actually the summit of a volcano rising from the sea floor. Hot Water Beach is a great detour where you can dig your own spa at low tide. Another highlight of this journey is the walk to spectacular Cathedral Cove, which begins at Hahei. The beach town of Whitianga is home to a fishing fleet - expect to eat some excellent seafood while you’re here. Catch the ferry to the south side of the harbour – a short taxi ride will take you to Cooks Beach.

Day 10 (Suggestion Only): Whitianga to Auckland 170 kms

Day 10 Takes you to the historic township of Thames via one of two routes. The road North via the township of Coromandel clings to the edge of the coast. Now a haven for artists, craftspeople and conservationists. There are several good walks in the area and an interesting museum You’ll enjoy amazing views and a constant procession of beautiful beaches, keep the camera handy! Today is a day of choices, there are 2 options to get you back to Auckland the fast way takes you to Waitakaruru then across the serene, green Hauraki Plains then whisks you along the motorway and over the Bombay Hills. The slower, scenic route winds through farmland to the village of Clevedon. Both routes make it possible to visit Miranda’s hot springs.

Day 11 (Suggestion Only): Auckland to Paihia (Bay of Islands) 233 kms

Day 11 Today you will take the inland coastal route, the motorway will quickly sweep you northward, until the suburban scenery gives way to peaceful farmland. Pass through the town of Orewa which spreads along the edge of a large, white sand surf beach. Stop for lunch at one of the stylish cafes and restaurants in Whangarei with an afternoon visit to Whangarei Falls. A series of small settlements will lead you north. Take a rest stop in Kawakawa at the famous public toilet! Next stop, Paihia, Bay of Islands!

Day 12 (Suggestion Only): Paihia (Bay of Islands) to Kaitaia 122 kms

Day 12 Paihia makes an excellent base for exploring the Bay of Islands. Catch a cruise to the outer islands or a ferry to the charming township of Russell. The historic Treaty House at Waitangi marks the beginning of New Zealand as a nation. Visit the Haruru Falls or take a trip to Kerikeri and picnic at Rainbow Falls. Scenic side trips on the road to Kaitaia include Matauri Bay (the resting place of the Rainbow Warrior) and Tauranga Bay. Further north, the beautiful beaches of Doubtless Bay will tempt you with white sand and crystal clear water Kaitaia is the main centre for the 'subtropical' north. From here you can catch a bus trip along Ninety Mile Beach. Other local attractions include the Far North Regional Museum and the nocturnal park. Plenty to see and do don’t forget the camera!

Day 13 (Suggestion Only): Kaitaia to Dargaville 122 kms

Day 13 The backcountry route to Dargaville takes you past the Herekino Forest, where you can stretch your legs on the Kaitaia Walkway. A vehicular ferry will carry you over the harbour to Rawene, a great stop for coffee and crafts. Further on is Opononi, where you can arrange to go sand dune surfing. Your next adventure is the awesome Waipoua Forest, home of New Zealand's largest kauri trees. Not far from Dargaville are the Kai Iwi lakes, a picturesque picnic and swimming spot. Dargaville is a perfect base for exploring the Kaipara Harbour, which offers fishing, quad biking, schooner trips and bird

Day 14 (Suggestion Only): Dargaville to Auckland 185 kms

Day 14 In early start today will see you travel across the river plain to Matakohe’s kauri museum, where you’ll discover the district’s fascinating history. In the village of Maungaturoto you can explore antique and craft shops. At Brynderwyn you’ll turn towards Kaiwaka, a village known for its Dutch cheese. Wellsford, Helensville and Kaipara Harbour are all on the route towards Auckland. There are hot springs at Parakai if you have time to spare. At Kumeu you’ll turn towards Waitakere, where you’ll embark on a beatiful scenic drive through the Waitakere Ranges. Auckland will reveal itself as you drive down from Titirangi village. With two huge harbours, this city is an ideal base for marine adventures.
